It\u2019s the beginning of a brand-new year, and with the changing of the calendar comes the opportunity to meet new people and embrace unfamiliar experiences. Whether you\u2019re starting a brand-new job, moving to a different place or making a resolution to broaden your horizons in your own unique way, adapting to new environments can be stressful and intimidating. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to identify and lean on the people who have your back\u2014and to welcome others who may not have a tribe of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You Don\u2019t Have to Go It Alone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some of us put an incredible amount of pressure on ourselves to fit in when we are faced with a new environment or situation. While these feelings are completely valid, it is important to stay true to yourself and remember that you are your own person with strengths, areas of opportunity and other attributes that make you unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is easier said than done, though, and sometimes we need to lean on others for support. Those others might be your family and friends, or people in your new environment who might be facing the same anxieties as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, imagine you\u2019re starting a new job alongside a few other new employees. This new environment can be very stressful, so don\u2019t be afraid to call family or friends after work some days to talk about your experiences and worries. While at work, try to connect with the other new employees so you can bond and support one another as you deal with a mutual situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring Others Into the Fold<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At one time or another, everyone has felt like the \u201cnew kid on the block\u201d\u2014scared and nervous to break into a novel environment filled with complete strangers. It can be difficult to take the first step toward introducing yourself and eventually acclimating to the new position you\u2019re in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s critical for each of us to keep our eyes open for people who may be feeling this way, so we can help them navigate their new situation. Invite your new coworker to lunch with you and your colleagues, or stop by your new neighbor\u2019s home to ask if you can help them unpack and move in. These small actions go a long way in making a newcomer feel comfortable and welcome. If everything goes smoothly, you may even have a new member of your tribe\u2014someone you can rely on down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be Curious About Yourself<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Adapting to a new environment is tough, but it can be much easier if you have a deeper understanding of your personality and behavior.
