Seriously, from the coronavirus pandemic to murder hornets, divisive politics and serious storms, 2020 has us all in need of some serious reassurance.<\/p>\n<p>If you read the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govtrack.us\/congress\/bills\/111\/sres261\/text\/ats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate resolution<\/a> designating September 12 as the National Day of Encouragement in 2009, you\u2019ll see the reason it still holds true today: \u201cnegative images, stories, and influences in the day-to-day lives of Americans can detrimentally affect their emotional well-being, interactions with others, and general demeanor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of offering someone\u2014whether a colleague, friend, loved one or even a total stranger\u2014encouragement is that it costs you nothing, but can net huge dividends. And if you are a leader in your organization, it should be part of your everyday routine.<\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of Encouragement<\/h2>\n<p>You may not realize the impact a few words of encouragement can have on a person. It can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let them know they are on the right path when they aren\u2019t sure<\/li>\n<li>Lift them up when they feel down<\/li>\n<li>Motivate them to keep going when they feel like giving up<\/li>\n<li>Spark their renewed dedication to a difficult challenge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Simple Acts Matter<\/h2>\n<p>Encouraging someone doesn\u2019t have to be complicated. A smile or a pat on the back and a \u201cgreat job\u201d may say it all. Here are a few other ideas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Say thank you for a job well done <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OjnGnKrAp3I&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a meaningful way<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Check in to see how they are doing\u2014by phone, email, text or in person<\/li>\n<li>Compliment them on how they did something<\/li>\n<li>Tell them something you admire about them<\/li>\n<li>Offer to help them with a goal or project<\/li>\n<li>Remind them they aren\u2019t alone<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Now More than Ever<\/h2>\n<p>You need only watch one newscast to see why we need to encourage each other now more than ever.
